Putting a light on it

My garage is not exactly the the most brightest of places to work and even with extra lighting which gives off shadows more often than not hindering my sight of the work area. I was wondering what do you use to get extra light on the workpiece without setting off the auto darkening on your helmet.

Today whilst working in a shadowy area I found the best way was to point a lead lamp at the work area in front of me held with my 'rest hand' whilst welding...what does the more experienced and discerning welder use?

I use a desk type spotlamp, as long as it shines from behind/ to the side the helmet does not react and weld vision is loads better.

pack of 3 at the 99p shop. Cost err 99p and headlamp, same shop same price. could not even buy the led's at Maplins for that and comes with batts

^ "klaatu barada nikto" sprang to mind..

A mate gave me one of those overpriced clip-on LEDs meant for MIG torches. Used yesterday for the first time, was surprised how good it was... Came with extra lens cover things, so I guess they do die from hot rocks etc.
