Punching slots in 10mm flat bar

I have been having my 10mm x 40mm flat bar punched through a local guy. However he is moving to a different county and aside from that I would like to do my own punching of the slots. Currently 10mm x 27mm and a 22mm round. I have a good plasma cutter but I know that punching is a better option. Looking for something that is portable.

That’s a job for either a very big fly press or hydraulic punch, neither is cheap nor particularly portable.

It would take one heck of a big fly press to punch 10mm steel.

In the distant past I’ve done such jobs on electric punches, pre war type stuff, huge flywheel and weighing several tons.

Not 100% sure of the capacity but I think the portable one I purchased would do the job.They are not expensive on aliexpress,may take a while to get here.

What are you making? I use a fair bit of punched 40x10 but buy it in and adapt to the job as needed.

Did you ever have a chance to look at the machine the guy is using to see what size it is?

What is your budget? What power source wil propel the machine?

How many holes/slots do you need at a time?

Hence, if it takes that much force to do the work in a static machine, that is the level (strength/capacity) of portable machine you need to look for.

This is a top brand comparable example in "portable", similar to the one shown by 8ob, although at 116 kg, that slightly overloads the credibility of the definition.

Note also that you need a pump (hand powered or electric) to push the oil into it, which is bought as a separate item.

Estate fencing?

I saw a while ago that uprights for estate fencing were available with the holes punched ready.
These were cheaper than I could buy the steel.
If I were doing anymore I'd go this route saves the time making the holes.

The only trouble is the rail spacing seems wide on a lot of Estate fencing and they won't keep sheep in.

Those iron workers are incredible. We have shipped several Kinglsand ones for customers - they seem the best and British - or used to be.
A 60 ton machine will shear 40mm diameter bar - scary stuff

we used to punch 10mm holes in the rear cross members of trucks. We used a 1500ton press, and that is defiantly not portable
