Help

I have just bought a Cobel Pulsed Tig and the instruction manual is not very good.

I bought this Tig to weld on repair panels on a car I am restoring.

I have used a DC Tig before and quite competent with it.

I need some help with the initial settings to get me on my way, I am lap welding 0.8mm mild steel over panels.

Can anyone help?

There's some discussion on pulse settings in this thread and some links too. No user manuals ever really explain how to set up pulse parameters as a lot of the settings are dictated by personal preference and (basic machines aside) there are endless combinations of parameters that can work

I am a fan of TIG for coachwork but it only makes sense to me if repairs are butt welds- filler additions can be kept to a minimum allowing the joint to be planished and metal finished with little to no grinding. If you can't get access to the back of the panel or if the repair is lap welded then planishing isn't an option and TIG loses out to MIG as the tool for the job.

I never use pulse for this sort of work personally, tacks spaced around an inch apart and then backstep the joint skipping around with welds around an inch or 2 long. Typically i run around 29-35amps depending on gauge of the panel and use 0.8mm MIG wire for filler

I have access to a few TIG pulse plants, never use it, but my type of work dictates this, teach them ruff & ready TIG, then advise/demonstrate the advantages of pulse facility, makes for better training and better welders through time!
