Pub type Co2 cylinders

I just wondered if these can be filled with a mixture of co2 and argon and if so, where and by whom?

I live in Brum.

Not something you want to try and get done because of the pressure difference between co2 and argon,i would hope no-one would even consider doing it for you ,sorry !,would need to get an argo-shield bottle instead,are you trying to avoid rental?

I live in Brum.

Argon and argoshield cylinders are charged to 270 bar, thats 3900 psi, if you try and decant into a pub cylinder, there will probably be bits of you all over Brum, Boc or air products are the people to go and see, a size Y rental is about £70 a year inc vat, £1.35 a week, not bad really to be safe

Cheers for replies. I'll prolly go the 'disposable route' then as I won't be welding often enough to justify rental.

I use CO2 at home because its easier/cheaper and argon/co2mix at college, while argon gives slightly neater welds there is more difference between a good machine/bad machine than CO2 vs CO2/Argon.

So, if I manage to get on a decent Mig at college then it can be neater than my Clarke but if i get on a bad machine then I wish I was using my Clarke, even with CO2.

As for using argon in CO2 cylinder, DONT! CO2 becomes a liquid unser pressure, argon does not therefore CO2 pressure is much lower for a filled cylinder than argon.

Hi john ,i have to agree ,i use argon/co2 at work co2 at home,for car repairs,i really don't think it makes any difference as it all ground away and i don't do anything longer than a stitch,for fabricating at home i can cope with the slightly more stuttery arc co2 produces,,, on my sealey 130xt it was more difficult than the more industrial thermal arc 180,,,but at £12 a fill with no deposit i can live with it ,unfortunatley i have to rent argon for tig welding ,if there was an easymix sytem (cheap)i could be converted at least at home.

hi never been on here before ive got a question about using pub gas in my weldlder it is a 130 murex welder if it can .can i still use my regulater which i brought for argon c02 mix be grateful for aney feed back or advice cheers.

i believe the co2 regulators are different from the standard mix regulators.

Argon reg can be used on co2 pub bottle but an adaptor is needed as the co2 bottle has a different fitting ............argon to co2.......sorry without pic i can'tbe sure this is right .....give weldquipe a pm ,he will help you

what i would suggest is try on disposable if u ever had that facility or at least make sure you can get pub co2 before buying anything ,must be said some machines do work better than others on co2 ,but it is cheap to try .....just realised halfauds charge a £10 for disposable i pay £12 for pub gas ,not really worth trying disposables at that price ,can always get rid on e-bay if u don't get on with it.

I use an Argon reg. on the CO2 bottle on my MIG so I don't see why it wouldn't work in reverse

You welder will 'work' with CO2, it's the quality of the weld that will be affected. Allegedly. Some of us weld so badly that f*rting on it might make an improvement...

Argon mixes are 2-3000 PSI

CO2 is about 1000 PSI.

A CO2 reg may not be rated for the higher pressure. Most are as they are the same reg with just a different fitting. It may have a blowout valve set to CO2 pressures.

Why not just buy a Co2 reg off ebay for around £20? Keep the argon reg just in case you ever need it? I tend to find Co2 regulators don't last too long before they stop regulating, maybe a year or 18 months, regardless of what I pay. Anyone got an explanation? Is pub gas dirty?
