pub gas

was going to get a bottle of pub gas but had heard that they are not pressure tested. and also that if there is back pressure or somthing the pub bottle will explode but one for welding wont. is it safe to use the pub gas for welding. i know that people will say that C02 is crap and i should get argon but C02 is what i can afford.

The pub type CO2 cylinders have to be pressure tested just like any other gas cylinder (every 5 years) so it shouldn't be a problem if obtained from a reputable source. Just make sure it's straight CO2 & not CO2/Nitrogen mix ("mixed gas" in the brewery trade)

thanks for the quick reply. from my reading i thought it would be ok but a local car components place told me they wernt tested and may explode.

They are not going to explode... although it has been known
They need to be pressure tested every 5 years & will have a plastic disc under the valve with a test date on so it can be validated. CO2 is relatively low pressure but the cylinder still needs to be right, I've seen all kinds of rusty demics dragged out of skips & God knows where
