pub gas problems

hi all,have heard rumours in our area[south lincs]about c02 bottles now having an additive put in them to stop people using them for welding.Apparently this is being done because the gas suppliers are losing income,do you think there is any truth in this or is it a wind up.Have been to a B.O.C.agent the registration+ bottle cost is nearly 130 quid ouch.

Some CO2 bottles have a CO2/N2 mix, but this is to make them more suitable for food & drink use, not specifically to stop people welding with it, although it does make it useless for welding!

different beers require different gas and mixtures for instance you cant use pure co2 for guinnes on the other hand you need pure co2 for the soft drinks dispencer so the pubs gas types will depend on what beers they sell.
larger uses pure co2 and is there only to replace the larger that has been drawn from the barrel as air could introduce bacteria where as co2 wont

Nitrogen is used for smoothflow drinks as it produces smaller bubbles and more of them, they are the spew of Satan and should be avoided at all costs causing brewers to only use pure CO2 and thus avoiding the problem.

Urban myth, it's because of reasons stated above. When you think about it the amount of people using CO2 whether pub or industrial cylinders for welding is tiny in comparison to the literally millions of other cylinders out there, it wouldn't be worth the extra expense

It seems to be human nature to think that if someone changes the way they do things and that stops you from doing things the way you're doing them, that was their intention. It's not always the case.

I remember a similar rumour when Torx fasteners started to appear in large numbers in new cars - people complained indignantly in car magazines that car manufacturers were trying to stop the DIY mechanic from doing their own servicing and repairs. The truth is that Torx fasteners are simply very suitable for automatic assembly. The manufacturers probably didn't give a second thought to DIY mechanics (they only think as far as the dealerships) and if they did, they wouldn't have considered it a problem that those people would have to buy a few Torx bits.

Valid, after all that's why Philips and then Pozidriv heads were invented (to speed up assembly lines)... so, arguably, why did they need to change to Torx? Also, Torx was subsequently modified to 'Security Torx' which IS to stop people tampering with them (you can usually jam a screwdriver into a Torx head).
I'm a service techie and it's a bloody pain having to carry a multitude of drivers to cover every eventuality. You'd think that these packs of hex bits with universal driver would solve that and so they might if the bloody things weren't made of chocolate... even the so-called reputable brands have the bits made in China from Mystery Metal.

There used to be a mine of it ib Japan, early 70's. Then it became exhausted and they discovered another lode in China. There is rumoured to be a smaller vein of it India.

Magnetic bits are available in decent quality, my issue with them is that the driver shaft is too bleedin thick to fit in some stuff

Jump on the Volkszone bandwagen. Years rental, registration and a full "Y" bottle for less than £62 including Vat.
