pub gas help please...what one to ask for

a friend of a friend is going to see if they can get me some pubgas

i said i wanted a bottle of pub gas , and they recon theres all differant types and pressures

so what do i ask for ? can i say a bottle used for xyz drink

nothings ever easy for me

You need pure CO2 (liquified, about 50 bar). Avoid mixes.

The way for your friend to identify this pure CO2 is an all black bottle. DO NOT get a black bottle with a white stripe down the side as these bottles contain another gas along with the CO2.

Beware Mart, An all black bottle "could" always turn out to be oxygen which he don't want.
The label needs to say C02 carbon dioxide. The white strip you refer to may indicate a dip tube which you don't want either.

Mixes to avoid may be termed as 70/30 or 60/40 etc which contain nitrogen, again useless for welding.

I saw a couple of oxygen bottles recently (discarded in a ditch) and they were black with white at the top-quite distinctive from the CO2 bottles that i was referring to. They were from the medical suppliers. Are you saying that there are some oxygen bottles that are also ALL black just like the CO2 bottles?-if so i did not know that. I understood the reason for colour coding was to distinguish to the point of preventing errors.

Interesting. The last time I changed an all black oxygen cylinder and got a replacement cylinder with a white top in return at BOC. Don't know why the colour change, think its to do with EU.

Yes, this can sometimes be the case. All black is the "old" code for industrial oxygen. New codes are being phased in as & when a cylinder due for test & refurbishment.

Without going into the finer points of old/new coding method and variations from different companies; The way to correctly identify cylinder contents is by reading the label. Colour codes are best described as "simply a guide"
