pub bottles

Hi,

I've been using BOC VB size co2 bottles for years, cost around £20 for a refill plus the usual £5.88 per month rental (paid annually).

On the market the other day I found a guy selling welding bits & pieces and he had a couple of the pub bottles, looked about the same diameter as the BOC bottle but maybe a few inches shorter, full of co2 for £20 with a refill costsing £12 when required.

I was thinking about this earlier today...can anyone give me an idea of how much gas these two different sizes of bottle would hold so I can work out the annual savings?

My BOC bottle lasts me about 12 months, any idea how long a pub bottle of this size would last?

Hi Peter,

I believe the VB size bottle is the waist size one yes??

If so this holds 6m cubed, the small knee high one holds 2.1 cubed.

So in theory if the one you saw is sized between those two, nearing the bigger one, it should hold between 4.2 and 5.1 cubed!!

I think the other issue is that the pub bottles don't hold the same pressure as the BOC ones.

As CO2 is stored as a liquid, the pressure will be the same.

My CO2 bottle has had the exact same pressure for over a year. One of these days, I bet it drops like a rock.

thanks for the info.

Apparently he can supply agroshield too though I've not seen what bottles that comes in, but at these prices I would probably have one of each (as there's no rental) so if I ran out while using one type I'd have a fall-back that didn't involve disposables.

When I worked at a welding distributor in Leeds we had a visit by two suits from Joshua Tetley & Sons asking us to tell our customers to stop using their pub C02 because they never returned the empties and they had lost several hundred from the system, locked away in garages. Personally I never liked Tetleys - it didn't travel well the 5 miles from the brewery to my local. I could see their point though, but it was a good selling point on DIY MIG's because the gas rental from BOC etc put a lot of people off.
