Protecting new powder coated sump

The sump of my car is very rusty (common problem on Smart Fortwo's - probably not helped by being low & rear engined) plus doesn't have a drain plug so I've bought a new item (with a plug ).
I assume the new sump is powder coated and would like to add additional layers of protection before installing.
Paint of my choice is Aldi black metal enamel (white spirit used to wash brushes).
Due to shape / design it not going to be easy to fully key every square mm of the powder coating around the mounting flange. MIGHT be able to gently dust the flange area with my sandblaster.
Am I wasting my time painting powder coating ?

If you are going to all that trouble I would remove the powder coating...............first chip in it down to bare metal whether you overcoat it or not and the water is just going to start doing its evil work

I would have thought a coating of stone-chip or Schutz might be better???

Don't pile it on too thick - the oil cools through the sump.

Mmmm. Might just fit it "as is" and then remove / paint at a later date if the powder coating gets damaged. I've had it on Chinese items that the coating has come off in sheets after just the slightest of nicks so don't expect it to last long under a car hence thinking of the extra layers of paint but now accept a bit pointless.

Sump went very rusty on my punto, brought another and sent it to be blasted and powder coating thinking won't have a rust problem again, a few years later it had started to bubble up again. At the time of was waxoyl the under side of the car so gave it a spray, once that had set I applied some grease and old engine oil with a paint brush, looks rough but no more issues ,that was about 4 years ago

i give rusty sumps a wipe over with a oily rag at service time...keeps em fine

if youre hell bent on protecting this one then i would bare metal and use epoxy primer with a 2k top coat...not really worth the hassle unless its a show car , bit of oil wiped round wont hurt it

I'd make sure first. I maybe just painted. pwder coating is usually all ove not just one side and is rarely masked.

You could always bare metal and Galvanise it or Chrome it

Coated inside and out - all over.
I'd gladly get it galv'd as I can get that done for free but am concerned about zinc in contact with the engine oil.

don't they put zinc compounds in oil and white metal has zinc in it. So what would be the problem?

Could you add a couple of brackets to the sump and fit a removable stone guard?
