propane bottle for a log burner

i've seen these for sale on fleabay and fancied having a go at making one myself, but i'm not sure how bust to purge the bottle to ensure all the propane is out before i go near it with any form of heat, your suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks Jim

when my mate made his, he emptyied all the gas out,removed the valve (i think it just screws in),then filled it with water until it was pouring out ,then cut it with an angle grinder,I'm not sure if this is the correct ? way to do it ,but it worked for him.

Yes, always fill them with water before thinking about sparks and things, butane / propane gas is heavier than air, and there could be some left. So always fill 'em with water first, that way you're sure. Search function, top left hand corner, lots of people have done this, they work well, good luck.

I made one.
I filled the bottle with water, turned it upside down and emptied it and left it there an hour.
Take care with the valve, some propane bottles have a left hand thread.
I suggest filling the bottle before you take the valve off, removing a valve off a part full bottle without emptying it is not good.

Yes, some foul smelling liquid does pour out. I assume it to be mostly water with some oil. There's no way it's liquid propane - not at the temperature and pressure outside, even on a very cold dayl With the cylinder moved safely away, any puddle of liquid on the ground can be cleared by firing a blow torch at it. The liquid burns to a certain extent and that helps get rid of the stench.

You can also use a fire extinguisher (CO2) as done on fuel tanks to clean them out and get rid of the gasses left once empty.
