Hi all
I am in the middle of tinkering with my mg midget and have started converting from the horrible rubber bumpers to chrome bumpers, and i need to modify the indicator on one of the panels. I have an older panel that needs the indicator part cut out, and then welded into place on the currently fitted wing (see pic – rubber bumper wing is the one with the big hole)

How shall i go about this. i will cut out the indicator to the same shape as the hole, but how should it be welded in position?

I would weld up the hole in the rubber bumper wing, cut the hole for the chrome bumper indicator, and do some crude panel beating to make the raised area (there is always filler to get the exact shape). Less trouble than cutting out sections and welding them in.

If the chrome bumper wings didn't cost a fortune I'd just fit new ones and save the hassle.

aye, i was thinking about that, even thought about just using fibre glass to cover the hole, then make a slight raised section with a hole in it?

new wings cost about £400 , so maybe not. But it does seem a lot of hassle to weld in an indicator panel

Flatten the edge of the old hole and weld a plate in then cut out for the indicator, cut a piece of 2mm plate to the hole shape and weld it on the front to give the raised effect.

Id cut out and weld in for definite, with care the finished job can be all steel with all the return lips etc and not distorted from beating.

Mark both wings with a line that needs to be on steel thats the same shape on both wings.
Cut the car wing first, then cut the spare but make sure this one is bigger all round.
Slowly trim off the new piece till it fits very closely in its new hole. The last of the trimming can be so fine you can use a file.
Weld it in using a few pulses spread around the perimeter, then more half way in between the first and so on until its all welded.
Grind back carefully and itll need almost no filling before paint.

Its easier than it sounds, just take your time.

What state are the rest of the wings in?

As rubber bumper wings are easy to get hold of this is one prodedure I have also considered for mine.
