Project # 2 .... toolbox.

I asked for some advice earlier to help me build a toolbox for the back of the ute. Many thanks to all who replied. I ended up cutting all the components with an angle grinder and then paid my local sheet metal man $20, which I was happy with (I don't have one of those "Pound" buttons on this computer and wouldn't know how many of them it is anyway !) to bend it all up nice and straight.
Welded all the external corners up, played with the flappy pad and all was good. I then fitted a few dividers, attached the hinges and hasp & staple ............. job done !

Am I happy ? .............. you betcha I am. I'm actually enjoying a nice bourbon and coke right now to celebrate a job well done (in my opinion). Everything worked out nice and straight and square.
It has now had a coat of paint and will get another one tomorrow before I bolt in into the ute.

Below shows the sliding tray for little bits and pieces.

I even managed to successfully plug weld the hinges on !

A slight slope on the lid to make sure water runs off it.

I did look at bigger , stronger ones, but there will rarely be anything of any value in there. Anything of value is securely locked up in the main toolbox. This box is mainly so I have somewhere to put all those little bits and pieces that tend to roll around in the back until they all rust and I have to throw them out..... the odd dyna bolt, little packs of nails and screws, tubes of silicone, a box of assorted packing. I'm sure I'll fill it up.

Nice looking box, excellent hinge attachment ( exactlely how I do them) X2 on needing a much better locking arrangement. Fit a small good mortise lock under the lid to latch under a welded on lip on the front panel. Just a keyhole showing then.

Hi, Good looking box, I do like boxes for some reason. I agree about the latch it needs to be heftier. The trouble is the local scrotes don't that there is nothing of value in there, all they see is a box with a weak latch so will attack it, if it's a better latch that will require more effort or time and will think better of it. (said with no antagonism meant)

I could have used one of these locks ..............
I have 2 of them on my main box, but it would require some modifications to fit one of them now as the tray is only 3 or 5mm below the lid. Besides, the little box will rarely be locked, if ever. It will keep the honest thieves out and they won't have to destroy the box if they do want to get in.

Babies ? .....what babies !? Don't know what you are talking about ! That reminds me, last year my wife and I had a little motorcycle trip up through the centre and we spent a couple of days at Ayers Rock (some call it Uluru) ........... that's one hell of a big rock !!

About the only interesting part of outback truckers is the scenery. Though I do like Steve Graham - he just seems to make it work.

I went to Ayers Rock hoping to climb it many years ago. Waited for three days in the middle of a desert for the rain to stop - they close the rock when it's wet because folk slip, fall off and kill themselves. Got fed up and moved on in the end. [#bucketlistincomplete ]
