Progress no1 drill

I currently have no workshop as my garage was taken down over the weekend ready to start building our extension, and as usual at this very moment something pops up on ebay that takes my eye!!

I had been keeping an eye on an Elliott no1 drill on eBay for a while as it was fairly local and had a decent starting price. So, managed to score this.....

for the princely sum of £88. Considering I had been looking at a cheap aldi £50 special the week before as I hadn't seen any decent old drills come up locally I think that's an extra £38 well spent.

Everything seems free enough with no play in the quill. The table is covered in surface rust but is absolutely unmarked. I seriously doubt this has seen much use at all (Was in an old chaps garage his son was clearing out, so I don't think it's seen industrial use.)

Still in bits in the boot of the car for this evening, will be dropped off at father in laws for storage until my new garage is built. Hopefully should be able to assemble it back up there and get a better look at what needs doing, but other a cosmetic clean up and maybe paint I don't think there is much to do , though I will probably clean and regrease everything as I go along for the sake of a few hours work.

Nice machines. I've a model 2G. It looks as though all you need is the clamp for the table, or was that included?

when I got there he had found the 2 inside bits of the clamp, which was a result!! not sure about the handle that goes on it though I think that may still be missing, but I'm sure I can make do with a bolt for now until I get hold of a new one. It may actually be included, but it was getting dark as I was leaving and we were both a bit out of breath after wrestling the thing apart!!

Any tips on maintenance or what to watch out for? It doesn't look like there is much to go wrong to be honest.

The weight was incredible, when I was in Lidl last week I had a look at one of the ones they were selling and I could pick the box up with 1 hand - 2 of us struggled to get this off the bench!

I've moved mine on my own, but only after reducing it to a pile of bits. the column alone weighs a ton, it's 3" steel bar about 42" long. Solid, British cast iron can't be beaten, IMO. Maintenance-wise there's not a lot to do. There's an oil nipple on top of the front pulley and another on the front of the quill. oiling daily is recommended, although for light use, monthly may do you.
The clamp handle is the same as the one on the head support collar.

On the 2G be wary of oil nipples - mine has one on the front of the casting that screws into a blind hole, in the bottom of which there are 2 grubscrews, one holds a bearing in place, the other locks the 1st screw!

For a clamp I used a long machine screw and when I get round to it I'll braze and allen key into to form a handle.

I have a bench top model, they do weigh a ton, i read somewhere mine weighs about 20 st. But they are a proper engineering machine tool, unlike the aldi/lidl specials.

I've seen that before too. Mine didn't have a nipple itted, but had clearly been dismatled in the past by someone who wasn't aware they were there. Result was a score on the side of the oil seal holder that allowed the gearbox oil to seep out over a period of months.
