Problems , why not .....

Me and my father are carrying on a steel construction company , not a huge factory , but we have some good machines and huge projects going on , I mean huge for a small shop like this ( welding , cnc plasma cutting , cnc bending , milling , turning ... we serve different companies which produce big machines and plants used in different applications )

That has been a long time in our shop without problems , no issues with our SwiftCut table , no problems with welding machines , work is flowing like a charm , everything was running like a dream ... and then it happened .

Got some problems with laptops ( overheating caused by dust clogging cooling fans ) , called a technician to solve it , and guess what ?? That person messed up everything and crashed drawing licenses somehow . We spent friday , saturday and sunday trying to figureing out how to solve it , at the end we setted up a pc with a old cad version just to carry on . Tons of parts to cut at the cnc plasma and bending , no possibility to open complex 3D drawings .... I think I've been so close to get a heartstroke ... .

Can you not contact thé providers of thèse licences, and get them reinstalled ?

Have you disposed of the body of the technician ?

Was stuff backed up ?

Let's say those licences were not so 'official' ... I asked him to be carefull , he said 'no problem' , and here we are , poor us .

I think I could literally kill that man , if I see him again . We got all the files but programs are not running at the moment.

Tomorrow I will ask for some help to a person which works a lot with high technology equipment and software and stuff like that , I'm really praying the Lord to get everything solved .

I think I could get back licences , but first I need a full reset , reinstall everything and I'm not sure it will work at 100%

there is no need to access your laptop other than check its working fine after a strip down and clean out of your fans

however how old is the laptop i bet its 2-3 years +

a laptop with an over heat issue will effect its hard drive and if on the old drive sata or ide it will fail

i suspect that your hard drive has failed or been failing not really the fault of technicion but really your fault

can it be salvaged if its failing yes to a degree hence the possible reasons why you have lost licenses as your hard drive lost part of its sectors as teh hard drive failed at these points

many of us have upgraded to ssd hard drives no moving parts in them but can still fail with time

something that important why havent you done or created a back copy of it

If it is that critical to your business, perhaps now is the time to make those licences slightly more official

Then you will benefit for having the technical support in the event something happens again.

You should also consider a disaster recovery plan or at least get a proper backup solution in place.
A computer can die at any moment, due to hardware failure, power surge, corruption, ransom attack or even a lightning strike - you should consider it almost a consumable (it is the data that is irreplaceable), and you need to have a plan in place to recover quickly.

Consider this a good opportunity to learn from so you can protect your business in the future.

im a base unit user with a lcd tv

its 5 mins to reinstall everything onto an ssd and start using straight away after restart

this is after you have created a back up via acronis via another hard drive and have use of a usb stick or cd/dvd the whole operating system can be saved to a usb stick but id advise keeping that thing safe they go walkies often

Yep , definetely my fault . We do not invest on low cost machines so we should do the same with software , and I've learnt the difference when things like my story happen ( now I would have solved everything in a couple of hours or so ) .

For sure I will go with at least one super laptop ( like DELL ) with original licences , it will cost me an arm but I don't want to be in this situation again in my life , I'm feeling so frustrated at the moment .

UPDATE
This forum gave me definetely some extra luck

Waiting my 'new' technician to bring back to life everything , I got a couple of licenses used by my dad a hundred of years ago ( they were there waiting in the office , under the dust , we did not throw them in the bin years ago ! We are used to not waste anything ) , a bit old software but still usable to manage drawings , this gave us a HUGE help .

The Lord gives , the Lord takes ... we solved the software problem but yesterday our iveco truck went on fire !!! The electric starter motor decided to rev like hell without any reason , smoke everywhere in a minute a then a flame , I was waiting for material at a supplier facility so an operator that I know personally ran immediately to me with a fire estinguisher . Just a very small damage it seems , our mechanic will let us know in a couple of days .
