problems welding

I have a SIP topmig 170 have been running it with a 13 amp plug on and have had it on the end of a 50 meter 13 amp extention lead.
It will weld ok for a few mins but then seems to start to spit and spark and you can not get a good weld out of it.
Also the earth lead is getting very hot and melting the plastic cable cover round the wire.
where am i going wrong please can some one help.

Think you will find the problem is the very long extension lead, try it direct from the mains & see how you go

Hello Peter,

is the extension lead fully uncoiled, for if not it can overheat and damage the extension.

Get some decent earth cable. Welders warehouse has a 200amp with a proper clamp for not a lot of money.
