Printer evaluations

so time to replace another one ,always bought cheap ones,the current canon mg5650,this one lasted longer than previous about 4 years!
I buy ink on line and rarely use colours,probably spend about £30/year.
Is it worthwhile splashing out on a laser one,would imagine costs increasing a little with reduced face to face meetings in the future. Thanks.

I have had one of these for a few years and has been faultless. A simple black and white laser printer, which give good prints. The cartridges are dearer to start with but last longer and don't dry up like inkjet ones

I have a decent colour printer for when i want to do pictures but in the office at home i use a Samsung laser mono scanner printer as it is fast and cheap to run and the ink doesn't run if it gets wet.

I got fed up with inkjets acting the goat when the ink dried out years ago. It made them very expensive on a price-per-page basis. I bought a cheap Samsung mono laser and got a good couple of years out of it before needing to change the toner cartridge. A compatible cartridge was reasonably cheap and worked fine for another year or so.
When the need to scan/copy started to increase, and everyone in the family needed to print from multiple devices, I bit the bullet and bought a wireless colour laser all-in-one (Lexmark CX310dn), presumably just after they stopped making them as it was much cheaper than anything else at the time. It has done a couple of years on the original toners and I’ll probably need to buy a high-capacity black toner fairly soon. I reckon it should cover my minimal print needs for 5 years at a cost of £130 for the printer and £60 for the black toner: 1000 black and 1000 colour pages claimed for the originals plus 2500 black pages claimed for the new cartridge. I probably print 5-700 black and 100-ish colour pages a year.

You should be able to pick up a mono laser for buttons if you don't need to do colour.
I know we did have a laserjet at work that was supposed to go on Ebay but I can ask the chief if he has a price in mind. Probably an HP, could be colour, not sure.

Meanwhile, I have an HP 6055dn that came out of a skip with no toner cartridge.
We have a 6055 at work for banging out invoices and we save the old toners to give to a charity for recycling. I pulled one out of the pile to try in my salvaged printer and it worked, then discovered that the printer can interrogate the cartridge as to how many pages it thinks it still has left. So I went back and pulled all the other scrap cartridges and found that three of them had more than 500 pages left! Not sure which of the office women thought that was classed as 'empty'.
Anyway, I'd heard of people refilling toners so I dug around and it seems it's not a popular pastime in the UK, something to do with the toner being seen as a carcinogen (isn't everything these days ). Ended up buying two refill bottles from a place in Germany via Ebay for £26 delivered. I refilled the two cartridges with the lowest page count so with the three serviceable ones it might well see me out, just printing CAD drawings, wiring diagrams etc.
I then discovered that you can buy cheapo-brand 'compatible' cartridges for this printer (which of course are probably the charity-recycled ones filled up by a minion) - £24 for two

I am of course talking utter cobblers: having left it too late to edit my post above I've realised it's not a HP 6055dn but a 2055dn.
