RIP Prince Philip, I often look at his, shooting from the hip gaffs, All absolutely brilliant,

He could certainly turn them out. The older among us will remember Daily Express cartoonist Carl Giles - I think it was in the 60s that he produced a cartoon of Philip quoting, "The Express is a bloody awful newspaper". That statement typified an irreverence that I've always admired in Philip.
RIP.

I live near Sandringham - I have met him lots of times over my life - decent type of chap!


Even when he was older - everytime I bumped into him - he asked how my Father was...?

(even noted I had a different dog with me - asked what had happened to my previous dog?)


Proper sort of "titled man" - when I was younger - he would come down and speak to the lads/girls on shoots and local things - dismiss his security - asked what everybody was up to? - took a genuine interest...


He will be sadly missed in Norfolk - did alot for normal people with - "crown estate leases" in the 80/90's...


Not the stuck up - pompous chap you would think he was...

I was watching him on tv wandering about a fancy hotel, he opened a cupboard door and was faced with hundreds of electrical cables all over the place. He took a step back and said "good lord are you employing Indian electricians"

I liked his sense of humour. You certainly can't knock his or the royals work ethic, retired in his late 90s is some going.

I recall hearing a story from older work colleagues about when the Queen & Duke of Edinburgh were in Shetland during the 1960's.
The Duke was onboard inspecting the 'Earl of Zetland' in lerrik. She was the isles ferry, and delivered goods etc to the isles before the ro-ro boats replaced her in the early 1970's
The 'Earl' crew had been round and polished all brass etc to get her looking her best.
It was during one of the excursion days - they took passengers from the isles to Lerrik, and back again the same day - so there were folk from all the Isles in Lerrik and around the boat.
A drunk Unst man who I can't recall the name of, was bumbling around the boat, and the crew had hidden him below while the Duke was onboard.
As it happened the Duke was somewhere forr'ad on her deck, when a hatch from below opened near him, and this drunk man popped up like a jack in a box.
He looked at Philip and says,
"Hey Duke! Nip ower to Don Leslie's shop an get me 10 Woodnbine's wid do?"
Crew quickly packed him doon the hatch & hammered on the hatch dogs so he wouldn't get up again.
I thought during the gun salute on the TV was a good time to share this story."
