primer guide coat

I need to apply a guide coat over light grey cellulose primer,would tinting primer with a little black cellulose top coat be OK? I understand that using top coat can clog wet and dry during flatting but would this be likely with only a very small amount added to thinned primer?

Hello Johnc,

there's no problem with using just top coat, thin well and just put on a light coat. It is harder than primer but doesn't clog wet and dry, used wet of course.

I prefer to use an alternate coloured primer for the mist coat, for grey I would likely use red. Topcoat is a bit more difficult to sand, and if you are sanding curves by hand, you could possibly end up with 'hollows' as the primer will sand a little easier than the top.

But this is just my 2d, and I am by no means a profesional.

I used to get the darkest bad cellulose mix from the paint shop.
Thin it a lot and dust it on from a few feet away, you don't want to put on an appreciable amount of paint, just enough so you can see it when you haven't sanded it off.

Any dark aerosol you have lying around, your sanding it all off

I just use a cheap aerosol, usually black. you only want a spotty coat so spray from around 24" away

i tint about the smallest amount of end of primer when cleaning gun.and use that more or less dirty thinners as guide coat.

Out of interest - if you didnt bother with the guide coat and wet sanding the primer and just keyed the primer with a scotch pad and then painted - what effect would it have when you spray the colour?

It wouldnt be flat. The idea is that any low areas will show as you will still see the guidecoat.
