prices on steel 20mm x 20mm angle

hi all,
this is my first post....
ive just been hunting around for some 20mm x 20mm steel angle online and theres only one place i can find that gives you a price (metals4u)
i nearly passed out when i saw that they want £25 for a few metres
now it has been about 10 years since ive bought any metals but am i missing something or is this price rediculously high

yes price is high but so is scrap
dont you have a local scrap metal merchant they might sell you some cheap

I recently bought 2 lengths 5/6 mtr 40 x 40 x 3 mm. Eight quid something each and that was with a very small material order................... so yes that's exceptionally expensive. Keep shopping about or phone some local steel workers, I'm sure you will find one that's ok and will help you out.

Whenever I phone my local metal suppliers they always seem to have to go away and do some shady calculations before coming back to me with a price some time later. It always ends up considerably cheaper than what metals4u list though. Graham.

£25 quid isn't bad for a single length when you factor in delivery, vat, lack of quantity buying discount etc.

Its very inefficient for them and you, so the price will be disproportionately high.

(I expect you could find it cheaper though). What is 'a few metres'?

For quantities where it's not worth me going to the metal supplier I tend to use an ebay shop called Ringwood Precision. This place is handy for me becuase it is just up the road from where I live and I can collect. Just had a quick look at what they list this for and they have 20 by 20 by 3 for £4.50 a metre (not a particularly good price becuase they are only currently listing it in short lengths) or (slightly better value) 25 by 25 by 3 at £13.50 for 3 two metre lengths. I would still expect an industrial metal supplier to be cheaper though, depending on quantities. Graham.

Have a look in yellow pages for steel stockholders and also fabricators.
I go to a fab place,40x40x3 about £12 a length which is actualy 6.1 metres.
I never need any longer than 3.6 metres so he cuts it where I need,one cut per length,no charge.
I've got a 3.6 metre length of 4x2 I bungee to roof bars then bungee steel to that to stop it flapping about.

Parker steel will give you a price online, but I've always found it cheaper to just ring up the local steel stock holder and ask for a price.

You might try Austen Knapmans online shop....a full 6m length only £12.80.
Delivery probably dearer than the material.

Or you could have browse through our list of friendly suppliers. Might be something in your area.

All depends where you are but online will nearly always be dearer than the local stockholder.Delivery adds a fair bit too if you only want one length.Most stockholders I deal with want between £10 and £39 delivery charge on top of the material cost and it`s rare for me to get less than one tonne at a time.
One of the stockholders I use a fair bit has a place in Rochdale if that`s any where near you.To get back to the question I would expect 20 x 20 angle to be well under £10 a length.

that 72Kg.

that's nearly £1.40 a kilo

That was last months price, not delivered.

mine was inc vat and cutting too. £105 to be exact with 6 cuts (needed then chopped in 1.2 to get them in the car)
try looking at the prices B&Q charge for small bits 20x20x2 1m = £13!!!!!!!

The prices on the metals4u website are per quoted length, not per metre.

I can only assume the total for 3 metres material + the cut charge is greater than the material cost for 6 metres.
