Price of steel...a steal?

Now that I think I can lay down decent runs with the R-Tech MIG, I've decided to make myself a trolley for the welder and gas bottle [like pretty much everyone who's ever joined the forum, I guess ].

Been studying the ones made by others and pretty impressive some of them are too! I'm just going for basic and needed steel for the project [might take some time, due to upcoming hospital appointments ].

Buying it online wasn't really an option, carriage to here being a killer - and some sellers refuse to post to the Scottish Highlands . I've found a Company in Inverness who supplied [and I know I won't need it all for the trolley....] 12metres of 30 x 30 x 3mm angle iron plus 2 metres of 100 x 30mm flat bar for £30 cash - I was happy to have found someone who'll supply what I need as and when, and reckoned it was a fair price - cut into lengths to fit in car too.
Does that seem about right, or did he see me coming...........?

Seems a good price angle isn't dear but 100x 30 is, I always get a pleasant surprise ( my local supplier in Stirling is Alexander's ) yeh I think you done alright !

Its ok considering the hassle they are putting themselves through for such a small order

I recomend you stay friendly with them

If you want keen prices you need to be looking at over say 500 + vat really keen over 1000 and regular

Your price is ok

Thanks for the confirmations lads, I did think I'd made a good find. They're manufacturers too, contact work/local authority work etc. Chap in charge is the owner and the business was started by his Dad 40 years ago. Worth keeping on their good side, methinks......

Sounds like a good place you've found. When I lived up that way there was a place in the same car park as highland industrial supplies that did sheet metal and fab. They were always happy to sell off cuts and bits and pieces for a few gold coins.

I know the place, they do a lot of fabrication work, looks to be mainly trunking although that might have been for one contract when I saw it. Mate got something done there he couldn't/wouldn't do himself and iirc they were quite pricey(?) - that could have been because they didn't want to encourage the 'little man' 'though.

The place in Tain have been really good too, in allowing me to 'skip dip' any time I want. Not sure if they would sell small quanitities 'though, and it might be foolish to short-circuit the skip arrangement. I'll bung them some beers at Christmas for that one......

I still lament the loss of Peddies in Perth. I was an old style Iron mongers (fork handles stylee). You went into the shop and got what you wanted from the counters staff or the stockholders, or both. even if it was one nut you didn't know the size of, they still helped. They would write a chit out and you took it to the Office where they would work out the price and then you paid them.

Unfortunately the owner retired and couldn't find a buyer. Lovey old building too.
