Price of ms angle?

Bought 5 lengths of 40x40x3mmx6M for £70'ish from a place before the holidays which seemed reasonable. Needed some smaller stuff so as that place was still closed for the holidays i went to another place while at work today. 30x30x3mm was £9 roughly +vat iirc, but after a hunt there was none in stock. Guy asked what it was for and said 25x25x5mm should do, so said i'd take 2 lengths. £28 it came too . Is that the going rate for joe public walking in off the street?

In my experience (as a buyer of modest quantities) the pricing of metal around where I live is a bit of a black art. A lot depends on how much you are buying. Sorry, I can't remember the figures but there was a time when I got a quote for some flat bar and some round bar in stainless (several lengths of each) - when I said I'd just like to take the one and not the other the price of the part I did want to take went up quite a lot (like half as much again). I often look at something like metals4u as a reference (although I expect to pay a lot less than what they quote).

The price you paid is about normal I think, as Graham highlights it's not easy to be confident what you will end up paying, most towns only have 1 supplier at best and they can alter their prices daily and sometimes it varies who in the office is working it out.

I always find it best to buy a good few £'s worth 'stock' of steel, easier for me because I tend to use the same 4 profiles all the time.

Thats sounds reasonable to me, considering you walked in off the street....

If you think about it, although the cross section area is smaller, there is more steel in the 25*5 RSA than the 30*3, more easily known by the weight per metre.

Your 40*3 is 1.84kg/m and about £2.30/m = £1.25/kg
The 30*3 is 1.10kg/m and about £1.50/m = £1.36/kg
The 25*5 is 1.77kg/m and about £2.30/m = £1.30/kg
8p difference per unit, think of fuel, supermarket, £1.36/l independant local garage £1.44/l (approx)

I get my stuff from metals 4 u, mainly because they will deliver free for anything over about £75 exc vat, that means I can buy 6m lengths of stuff and cut it up at home.

Even getting 3m of stuff home under my own steam is a nightmare.

i charge about 90p-£1.10/kg to jo public,if i have to do any cutting then there's a labour element to add,as i have loads of various offcuts then customers often find what they need on the racks negating any need to cut a bar.

Yeah but the unit price will be much higher.

That's the price you pay for small quantities and user friendly website etc.

There are at least a couple of companies who do it.

My delivery cost is £10 for any quantity, works out ok because I tend to buy between a 10 and 20 lengths of assorted whatever at a time.

most compaies around here will deliver for nothing if you are on their route and will deliver regardless if you order £100 or more

i am lucky as celtic steel lorries come past the road most days so getting a small lenght delivered is fine once they know you
