Preventing rust

Looking for a product to keep the surface of my welding table from rusting.

Seen a load of American videos featuring products like Johnson’s paste wax and minwax finishing paste.

Obviously I don’t want to use the likes of wd40.

Any recommendations of something I can rub on, give a buff and then not have to worry about?

A dusting of as-90 would do the job.

Bees wax mixed with linseed oil.
Or bee's wax and white spirit will do the same job

Just ordered a kilo of beeswax. Do you know what ratio to mix it to?

Break in 1" cubes, .Mix untill a dmoosm creamy past.
How much depends on the wax.

Will this work for any exposed steel? I quite like the look of raw metal on old vintage cars, and fancy a bit in my hot rod, maybe the dash board. I’m going for the old and well used vintage race car look rather than modern and shiny. This is what I’ve built so far, and there will be some brass and copper in there with gauges etc.

On a similar vein, I’m toying with the idea of building a steel fuel tank too. It would be Mig welded steel sheet, nothing fancy, but is there any way to rust proof the inside of it, without resorting to pouring chemical ‘liners’ in and sloshing all around? I’ve heard several of those are not actually resistant to modern ethanol based fuels. Or should I just save the drama and buy an alloy one?

I’ve had so many people tell me it is just a cleaner, not a lubricant, and doesn’t leave any lubricating or protective residue. Clearly they have never used it.....

I use spay wd 40, or similar last one was from 3 n1 oil, on mine. On my lathe too, but on the lathe its just to help with the moisture in winter as it has a liberal smear of oil on everything.

I use Liberon lubricating wax on bandsaw, planer thicknesser and wood lathe, seems to work well if applied relatively often, usually monthly unless I have used them pretty hard in which case after use, without leaving any residue on timber. Liberon also sell beeswax mixed with turps in a similar tin, I have wondered if it is similar but with a different label but I haven't compared it. I have beeswax and turps so may mix some and test it

Hi all.

Well this is for a welding table. even if wd40 is as good as everyone says and I have no reason to believe it isn’t, I’m concerned with a light oil contaminating welds. Therefore I’m looking for something that’s thicker. Plus, I like the idea of rubbing in wax and buffing.

In practice not a big issue. Before a big job I will run over with a cup brush and I regularly remove any wayward spatter.
Occasionally I give it a squirt of any think. To hand from wd 40 to antispatter (just wipe 5-10 mins after application ).

Whatever you will get accidental arc strikes and such (unless you are only doi g iddy biddy delicate jobs). This is why I believe the top should be fastened down with csk m10s

Even if I bend mine it could be rolled straight or replaced.

I agree with them being bolted. I use slats and square plates so individual ones can be replaced.

Boiled linseed oil has been used for centuries on anvils and such.

Castrol DWF spray. Dries off and smells nice!

I use the dreggs out of oil cans whatever is around just have a rag poor the remains out and rub around had hydraulic oil engine oil gear oil allsorts on it have to rub it in well or the table smokes but i find it as good a use for leftover oil as anything else
