Pressure Testing pipwork

Hi all

I am currently doing my c&G Lvl3 in pipe welding and want to know if and how people pressure test their welds afterward, on sections that can not be visually inspected?

Hello Rob,

Depends on what it is and what the law requires. For example we have lots of process equipment that has various either mostly harmless or hot and otherwsie mostly harmless liquids, they'd probably only have a simple pressure test (hydraulic - i.e. water, never air or other compressed gas). This could be as simple as attaching a nearby water hose. When we move into steam and some of the compressed air stuff, you move into the pressure systems regs, and the test is far more prescriptive, e.g. boilers etc. Then it is normal to have a hydraulic test (again) of 1.5-2 X maximum safe working pressure. There are BS and ASME codes that dictate this depending on application. In addition NDT (Non destructive testing) is also potentially specified.

oh thats good it is a water pipe i have been asked to extend first so that will just be a simple pressure test i am thinking. we have a rothenberger oressure tester on site which we were going to connect up the only qustion is working out what presure to thes it too? any ideas? the pipe is 1" od stainless steel.

as mentioned, usually test to 150%.
