Pressure Gauges ??

why are pressure gauges filled with liquid these days?

im sure they never used to be in days of old?

the oil is a damping agent some old gauges have it to

there mainly used on power washers ect filled with glycerine to damp the fluctuation when pumping otherwise they would fall to bits like mine did

They are usually glycerine filled, commonly found on hydraulic machinery where there may be sudden pressure variations or vibration, as MK says not a new idea.

yes i did look it up on google and noted that the liquid is glycerine.

ive been noticing it more and more lately, hydraulic presses, compressors everything seems to have a gauge filled with liquid.

not saying its a new idea but id say its deffo more common with modern stuff. either that or ive been walking round with my eyes closed.

I've got a 1943 prismatic compass that's oil filled, so the idea's been around a while

they will also be dampened so you can see the reading otherwise the needle would be all over the place

lol all over the place mine showed between 1500 and 1600 psi for 3 mins and the pointer fell off [metal fatigue ]

The damping is both to make readings easier and to prevent excessive rapid fluctuation of the gauge which would wear it out very quickly. Not all gauges are damped though, it's an option.
