Press/Pillar Drill

I need recommendations re a press drill .<right now i'm doing research and would like a number of brands to look for . <i need to buy it for wood and metal drilling and needs to be able to drill through solid steel. I'm a hobbyist but still need to buy something heavy duty.

new 1phase. Budget is about $450. I came across the brand Jet in Malta Europe and a bunch of chinese crap... From my experience its good to buy good tools like makita and dewalt but unfortunately they do not make press drills and the dewalt is way out of my budget. I opt for a bench drill. I also found sealey, draper and sip online but am a bit afriad to buy online due to aftersales service re parts. Whats your opinions re Jet first of all? and...

I wouldn't be at all surprised if 'Jet' is Chinese stuff rebranded as most of the cheaper drill presses (and other machines) seem to use Chinese castings etc. Quality-wise you get what you pay for, obviously, but you may find they use better quality parts.
Unfortunately I don't think Jet is a brand we see over here so we probably can't help you much.
Their stuff does look very similar to one brand we have over here, Chester, so it may be they source their stuff from the same factories.

its sold in axminster tools catalogue as well under jet name the spec and drill look reasonable for the price if u have a budget . i have an old churchill which will outlast me but if u cant pick up anything decent second hand or something u can repair its worth considering it looks better than the clarke ones there crap

I thought all their stuff was Axminster branded.
It does look half-decent, certainly not the usual generic Chinese stuff.

there's a few tool dealers sell jet [including axminster] equipment I believe it's the top end of the ''chinese'' stuff, also it's the same colour as ''axminster'' own brand,I've used one of their oscillating bobbin sanders & it was good. We have a ''******'' pillar drill at work & it's only a couple of yrs old[not jet] & when you pull the quill down there's noticable radial play,when I do the same with my''meddings'' there's none,& it's about 30+yrs old,you pays your money & takes your choice!! meddings probably get their castings from china now but I'm not certain.
