Ideal ways of putting on the prep for 1" plate, in VERY large quantities...

Is anyone aware, for instance, of a plasma method of getting a 30 degree angle on...

Straight line burner on a track with nozzle set to correct angle.
Plasma can be used in the same way.

Often cheaper/easier to get the supplier to do the cutting for you.

Doing some 250mm box section posts at the moment - paying £2 per cut. Saves a lot of messing about our end - just shove em on the bench, weld a plate either end, and they are off again!

On the railways gas was prefered, as paul said straight line cutters ideal for bevels, but there are simple cheapo gizmos to clamp and guide your torch, plate bevelers the other one, but gas and grinder on 1" for me...... a straight line cutter be the best tho if you have loads to do.....1" at £800 a sheet lots off sounds expensive job to me

Plasma on the straight line would be even quicker

Gas or Plasma, on a profile bed, or use a Pug. Just set the head to the 30 degrees.
A quick lick with the 9" and its done.

30deg isnt that bad, plenty of edge left before it starts burning away.

Using a hand torch will work, but it needs to be held nice and steady, with smooth travel.

Gents, especially pro guys, I use a couple of these cracking bits of kit, one set for pipe, tuther for plate.

Good purchase if work justifies, as they are pricey. No heat required and, no damn grinding back to clean material Oh, and very quiet compared to some other m/c's on the market.

Hey lads etc. This isn't for a job of mine, but product of a conversation with an engineer on this project. Got me wondering.

They are trying to cut costs on welding and prep - too much manual work, more auto needed. Not my place to advise as my quals really don't get there, but interesting nevertheless. It's mostly 1" S275 or S355 steel (construction grades), with massive stresses, so the quality of welds has to be top notch.

They are looking at various weld methods - submerged arc they use a fair bit of, but obviously there could be others - dual core and auto tig for example. Much of the cost comes in prep and post weld work, which they would like to avoid if poss.

Interesting project - it's a local company, closely allied with the hydraulics co i'm doing a lot of work for at the mo.

Not your typical gas-axe job then! Plasma profiling or even laser cutting?

A good bloke on a oxy fuel cutter should be able to do a 30deg bevel, with a light tickle just to take the scale off the cut without to much trouble.
Someone like Pegasus profiles should have no trouble supplying stuff like that.

Yep, thats the thingy I viewed in the water when I visited SS7 spool base, I never knew they were doing this cutting edge stuff doon the road.

Here y'are chaps. Have a look at this pdf. The thing's bloody massive! I've only ever seen it from a distance being towed through the Firth, and it looked like a wee worm. It's not.
