pre primed I beams

We got some shotblasted and pre primed 203x133x25 I beams today , how does everyone prepare the ends before welding ? Im sure you cant just weld over the red oxide

I just run the red oxide off with a flap disk

For pre primed steam pipe I use a bit of thinners and some scotchbright, saves having grinder rash everywhere
