If you're making a mould then the first thing on the plug after the release agent should have been gelcoat, assuming that the plug had the desired finish before. If it didn't then the surface needed attention before making the mould
Yes you're dead right however I wanted to use my R/C plane as the plug so I covered it in plastic film to protect it, after the mould cured I simply pulled the plastic off. I then had to fill the dents etc... did I make more work for myself, maybe but then I didn't have the process of making a plug from scratch.
