practice stand

looking for ideas for a quick and easy, yet effective, practice set up for stick welding initailly, probably end up using it for everyhting else too, but for now its stick welding based.

ideally something that isnt too bulky, can be clamped in the vice as i dont like tacking to the bench, adjustable and preferably with a clamp rather than having to weld the work piece to it.

i think the staring point will be something like a scaff tube as i already have that available and can always get more cut to whatever length i need.

I built one last year out of crap bits ,2 holes drilled in each collar and m12 nuts welded to them. Cheap vevor swivel wheels, i wanted it fully adjustable and be able to slide it out the way when not in use.
I use it quite a bit.

Thank I have no regrets but i am thinking of doing something with the business end of it ,maybe add a small vice or clamp like i see some do. Get it done

i think id prefer a clamp, i have a cheap drill vice that doesnt get used, may use that. i have scaff tube, nuts, bolts etc and i think i may have a bit of tube that is a decent fit over the scaff tube

I actually wish i had came across these., they can be found cheaper and various sizes but beats chopping drilling and welding nuts at that money, I'm not crazy about welding galv though.

i am almost positive i can get these off any number of the sites i visit....we do a lot of steel erection and handrails/catwalks around tanks and other structures...

speaking of which, i have a few scaff fittings somewhere, im sure i could make something from that

you can slide the horizontal piece up and down the vertical piece for height adjustment, and then you can attach work pieces or mock joints to the 'open' end for out of position practice, or to put something cack-shaped into a better position to weld

i want one for out of position welding practice, up/downhill, horizontal, overhead etc as i never do much of that sort of stuff but when i do its a ngihtmare to get back into it

Like Biker said it was just to practice funny joints in funny positions.I don't get the opportunity in my line of work and love a challenge. loosely based on the image below by triangle engineering, I just have to finish it off by knocking up a clamp or two instead of welding to it.

This is exactly the type of set up you would use for a 6G pipe butt qualification along with many others including fillets at different angles.
