Power supply for welder

So ive spoken to a sparky regarding getting me a dedicated power supply in my garage for a welder. I cant use the fuse board in the garage as it only has a 16amp supply from main board in house. I can potentialy run a seperate cable from house main to garage but he says remember the house service fuse is only 80amps. I thought most are 80amps so my question to you guys is how have you got yours set up. I mean the max the welder will pull is 50amps but it will hardly ever be doing this kind of serious work.

Please help guys im getting a right headache here. All i want is a nice welder at home lol

just get the heavier supply put in to your garage to run welder. its no bloody diffrent than running a 10.5kw shower or a large cooker its going to be intermittantly rated anyhow so its not pulling full load permanently

Ask your sparky to assess your house/appliances for loading, he will apply something called diversity and be able to work out what spare capacity you have. Depending on loading you may be able to have a 40A supply to the garage, all that will happen if you push the welder to it's limit is trip the mcb so no harm done.

This is what i thought, we have a small electric cooker, washer and dryer no shower ect so should be fine. So do you guys think i should up the supply to the garage or run a seperate supply from house to garage. I think aprky has fobbed me of a little as started saying he has to much on at the min ect so might ask another.

if u have a current db with a spare way u could fit a 50amp mcb in it and run new supply to garrage, if not u can fit a 60 amp switchfuse at source of supply out to a new db in garrage depending on site survey

if u have a current db with a spare way u could fit a 50amp mcb in it and run new supply to garrage, if not u can fit a 60 amp switchfuse at source of supply out to a new db in garrage depending on site survey

I google a few of your words but could only find what the 50amp mcb was lol

u could fit a 50 amp mcb in your current distribution board and run a new cable out to your garage with dedicated supply just to your welder and leave the rest as iss is the cheapest option

10.0mm will well cover at 50 amp np as long as its not a long distance away

When you buy the cable ask for an external (CW) glandpack to suit.
