Power steering seal

Hope somebody can help with a little info,
My Land cruiser started leaking(a lot) from the sector shaft that carries the Pitman arm,Very simple arrangement of just an "O" ring and a thin tapered teflon ring held in with a backing ring and circlip.I have searched the net and been to half a dozen seal/hydraulic repairers and completely drawn a blank.I may have to just but a new nitrile/viton "o" ring and turn the teflon tapered ring.Would be grateful if anybody has come across this type of seal,Just to know what sort of pre-load if any that is needed on top of the teflon to seat it between the shaft and "o" ring,amazingly simple seal that holds quite a lot of pressure,(in excess of 500psi i believe)

I have tried Milners, they don't do Land Cruiser steering boxes any more, And would you believe it Toyota charge £2400 for a new steering box and even want around £350-00 for a seal kit,

Never seen a ring like your describing Gordon ,on a lot of high pressure cylinders and filter housings etc we use anti-extrusion rings made of ptfe,....ANTI EXTRUSION RINGS

You may have a bigger problem. Usually the shaft will only be under low pressure (case pressure). The high pressure bit is internal to the box and is returned via the return hose to the resivoir after doing work (steering). Any leakage past the high pressure side will overpressurise the case and cause leakage at the shaft. Leaking could be caused by a blocked filter in the resivoir.
If the leak is pumping out then look to the HP side. If its a heavy weep then could just be worn seal, filter etc.
If I am right then the preload on the taper ring and Oring will not be crittical provided there is not a problem with the HP side or return to resivoir/filter.

This is a recirculating ball type,Seems to work by putting the pressure either over or under a piston that the worm screw passes thro' ,the seal i have shown would have to take the full working pressure,

I have tried Fluid Power Darlington, Most places say bring the parts in and the design folks will sort it out and they will make something,That route sounds pricey, I'm sure if I can find out a bit more IE: principal of how it works and info Re: any pre-load or not I can buy the "o" ring and turn up the tapered teflon for a few pounds.
(P.S. took almost 20 tons to get the Pitman arm off the splined taper)

Will contact them tomorrow, web-site says they sell seal kits, If required I can give them all measurements accurate I have taken and also sent the drawing via email,

i've had a couple of failures fitting new seals -1 on a steering pump & 1 on an axle,i think the seal failed due to wear on the shaft surface.hope yours is ok.

I have used these guys for Land Rover PAS boxes http://www.4x4gearboxes.co.uk/ they also to g/box repairs for LCs so maybe worth an ask. All they can say is NO!

Rang Jay Gee hydraulics as recommended by tigler, Spoke to a very nice chap (Bob) he knew exactely what i needed in the seal kit. Getting one sent to me for the princely sum of around £17-00 for both input and Pitman arm shafts.

P.S,I knew this type of steering box worked a quite a high pressure,so asked Bob how high, Reply was up to 1500 P.S.I.depending on what the relief v/v is set at, (wondered why the metal line from the pump to the box had such a heavy wall
