Power steering pressure test

Is there anyone that can test the outlet pressure of a PS pump? Resetting the PRV to lower the Cummins pump to something that won’t eat the box and would rather have someone put it on a rig than buy a load of pipe work and gauges etc for one job

I would of thought a hydraulic company or steering specialist should have the right equipment for that sort of job

think u also have to worry about the flow rate as well....

Pump is more than up to the job, just in it’s normal role it’s pressure output is twice what the Land Rover steering box is rated at and will just crack the box, hence altering the prv.

hydraulics place is on the cards, was more wondering if any members did that sort of thing

I would have thought it would be just as simple to set the PRV to lowest setting and increase it gradually till the steering worked as expected.

I’m replacing the spring with one quoted on a group, but I want to be sure of the output before I blow a steering box apart

Just fit a gauge on the outlet port Dan, the spring in theory should regulate max output pressure and bypass internally. Frank does have a point about flow, too much flow will have the pressure relief valve doing overtime and cause heat/foaming of the fluid .

Will dead heading the pump like that not disagree with it? I don’t think anyone else has had any issues with overheating/foaming of the fluid on their conversions, although they’re paying 80 odd quid to have a spring changed

It may well be the correct flow Dan, I was just saying that Frank had a point and too much flow can cause problems. Fitting a gauge in the pump is no different to holding the steering hard on full lock, that's where the pressure relief takes over and bypasses.

That’s very true, hadn’t thought of it in that way.
