why do some inverters appear to use considerable more power than the other brands with the same amperage namely a thermadyne ac/dc uses 8.7 kva and fronius mv1700 only uses 3.3 kva according to the website?would the thermal arc machine have a higher voltage at the same amps or something.Is it a quality factor or is it extra features on the thermal arc or something.I'm very concious of this as I only have light cable goin into my workshop at the mo and the power comsumtion is a major factor

You did not say the max welding currents of the two, they may be different. What model Thermadyne are you comparing the Fronious to?
One may have power factor correction. I see the Fronius lists a power factor of 0.99. Inverters do vary in efficiency and power factor.

I think a lot of it is down to the circuit design. We have issues with x-ray systems: an old-fashioned transformer-rectifier set can produce 160kV at 10mA from a 13A plug, yet a later iinverter design needs a 32A supply to produce the same amount of output. The inverter is also more unreliable, harder to diagnose faults and more likely to go pop if the mains is unstable. However another inverter set can produce 200kV from a 13A plug, can be slung over your shoulder and can diagnose its own faults!
