Potholes...grrr

On me way to get some stuff this afternoon, and ended up hitting a pothole, had a bit of water in it, and couldnt see it was as deep as it must have been.
That, or a rangerover

Quite a bang. Now suspension is creaking when i push it down...pull away or stop.

Only had a quick look, bottom ball joint is shot, and i suspect the anti roll bar link.... was on its way out anyway. Creaking seems to be coming from the spring... it looks fine, nothing obvious, clearances beteen coils look the same both sides...
Tyre was a beauty, bead almost split right away from the sidewall on the inside

Any thoughts?
Its a '99 Berlingo van.

You might have been on two wheels.
Seriously it is horrifying the state of roads after the cold weather.
I have seen holes 12" deep and the same wide, scary when on a motorbike or pushbike.
As Madkayaker says get onto the council. I have reported a few potholes and they seem to get fixed soonish. I gather once they are reported the council are more liable than they would have been pre reporting.

If it was a particularly hard bump it could be that the coil spring has cracked - probably in the final coils around the lower seat. Its definitely worth checking.

How many miles as it done? It's not uncommon for springs to crack under normal use this could have been the the final straw.

As for potholes and as a mini rant: I think its getting ridiculous, the other day I found I'd taken a big chunk out of a sidewall on a tyre that's only done 6k... Grrrr! It could be worse a mate wrote off his ka trying to avoid a pothole on a wet bend.

If the vehicle doesn't lean, Your spring will be fine. I once hit a pothole so hard that it displaced the front spring from its mounting. Lifted the truck (Ford F150 pickup) up on a 4 foot jackall and pushed in back in place.

My parents hit a pothole on the M6 when they were coming up to visit, result, one snapped spring.......

The broken end of the spring ended up turning a groove on the inside sidewall of the tyre. close call.

Well.... oiled up the spring cups last night, seems to have reduced it considerably.....
On me way to get the new tyre this morning, and a recycling collection truck has stoved the front OS in...bonnet, lights,grille.....round a lane i dont think he should have been....'Unsuitable for heavy goods vehicles'

I was just thinking the other day, as I drove down a road that looked like it belonged in a war zone, that I used to drive on better quality roads in Africa 25 years ago..........

Hit a pothole in Recar last Monday in our lasses company SEAT, the edge of the alloy went through the sidewall. She's not in the mood to harass the council so the tyre went on expenses; I'm still suggesting she chases for compo, after all we could have been on the bike. Oh no sorry I forgot: my bike was written off when some young twunt rammed me from behind at a pedestrian crossing two weeks ago...
Spectacularly, her company car is only a temporary one after the original Leon was, guess what, written-off in Darlington a month ago when some twunt pulled straight out of a side road into a line of traffic. Good job he'd gone before I got there...

We've got a lot round here as well, but the council web site has an interactive map to report them (so you don't have to actually talk to anyone and get upset) and to be fair they're pretty good. I've reported some before now and they've been fixed by the time I get home from work.
