If you get your hands in the solution made with caustic, do they feel soapy, like the do if you get plain caustic soda on them?

No. The caustic is completely neutralised by the acid - the solution is still slightly acidic, but not enough to irritate your skin (well mine, anyway!). It's pretty benign.

When you're mixing it, if you're using caustic soda (NaOH) the solution does get hot. (If you're using washing soda, it fizzes instead.)

I came across this video, a famous YouTube gunsmith has published a rust removal recipe that uses the same chemical mechanism as Evaporust. For those who don't know, EvapoRust uses chelation instead of acid and has the advantage of not damaging the base metal. It works great but is very expensive. This guys formula is slightly acidic but a fraction of the cost and lasts longer.

I've watched this YouTuber before, he comes across as honest, so worth trying his mix.

IMO any time citric de-rusting is suggested, this is the video that should be referenced - DIY chelating solution is just citric but better and more gentle.

Unless it's something that is really rough anyway and you can save a bit of cost with just Citric.

If I make up enough of the citric / soda solution to sink half the rim into, and then flip it once a day or somthing, will I get some skuzz "tide" mark?

I've ordered 2kg of citric and I'll pick up some washing soda from the supermarket in the week.

2kg is 20x 100g, so will only do me for 20 ltrs.

That may not even be enough to do half the rim, but I wanted to see it in action before going "all-in"

I suggested making it half strength (so you could get 40L with 2kg). It still works. You do get a 'tide mark' if something is sticking out of the solution that needs to be wire-brushed off (pretty much everything else except stubborn rust scabs will rinse off with a hose).
