so looking for a set of wheels n tyres on market place , I have mud n snow on my l200, normal size , but want road tyres for summer , spotted a set with good tyres , reasonable price with offers accepted , so I asked would they accept £50 of as I would need to get them collected , bartered a bit and agreed a price , seller offered if I paid half and other half when courier delivered . So he sent me his details for paypal, now I do know not to use friends and family , got logged in and straight away noticed instead of lets say his advertised name of fred bloggs the account was in the name of lets say hamal lefsar , I questioned this , oh thats my son, ummm with a different surname ? ok well paypal is paypal mate . Sorry cant pay as paypal wont pay out on a sale unless its the advertisers name on the account . end off . damn scammers eh so although he seemed to be a fair guy offering balance on delivery it just goes to show they will use any trick to get some of your hard earned eh.

My dad had this when trying to buy whheks for his 350z. European guy in the Facebook profile, Asian name whe setting up the bank transfer.
The guy sounded legit it was only the name that gave it away. Same excuse, it's my business parter that's why the name is different. The sort code was for some scummy bank.

You would find similar if you bought something on FB off me, I use a "nom de plume" on social media so my Paypal account would appear to be in a different (my real) name, I have sold a few things through various FB groups and will normally explain the name difference at the PM stage and never had any issues.

I also use a pseudonym on FB. Very occasionally I've had problems with sellers not seeing a profile & so refusing to engage.
If I'm buying, even if the item's a million miles away, I'll always ask if I can come & have a look. If there are excuses or more often, no reply at all, I'll just put it down as a scam avoided.
If I'm selling, I'd always rather people come & kick the tyres & pay cash however if it's practical & they need it posted I'll only do so PayPal friends& family.

Sometimes there's an innocent explanation...

I closed my PP account many years ago (I'd used it for 10+ years then they decided they needed to see my driving licence / passport / utility bills / letter from granny etc). If I'm buying and seller insists on PP I ask a mate to make the payment for me & I'll settle when with mate when I see them. A few member selling on here have had a message from me "You asked for Paypal. I can ask a friend to send the Paypal from their account or I can do bank transfer. Your choice..."

A nice lady I know had money in her account but was having problems with her card so couldn't make a payment, arrangements were I would pay and she would settle up with me once she got her card problems resolved.

Totally genuine and honest in both cases but the account payee wouldn't be what you would expect.
I'm also seeing plenty of scams so there's no easy answer.... be lucky.

I work as a sole trader. The BACS stuff is on the invoices. Very occasionally someone will query the name on the account (my partners) but its infrequent.

It may be odd, but, in our case, this is all 100% above board, tax paid trade, etc.

I also have a nom de plume on FB. One drawback of the bulletproof one I chose is that I am often propositioned by hopeful Asian suitors.

I always blank it when they say its in their wifes name , just does nt give the trust I am looking for , but very cautious has no doubt saved me from scams , although if local I will always view so no problem then.

In my case, the people asking me for an invoice are people who have specifically found / chosen me to do the job for them. Ie im not a "random" person to them, but they have specifically come to me.

At that point, it doesn't really matter much what name is on the invoice.
