Portable oxy acetylene

Hi i am in need of oxy acetylene but i will only be using it every now and then as i will be using it for heat shrinking and maybe the odd loosening off of things. I dont need anything big like porta pack as i wont use it often enough. I did find a good kit but for the smallest bottles off AP it was going to cost me around 200 quid alone. I want something small and handy but has a good heat and a verry thin concentrated flame. Is mapp Gas kit any good ?? Thanks

Straight MAPP is better than propane as it is hotter. I have a MAPP torch and it does generate a wide flame. It does have a small burner that generates a thin flame that is very long (3+ inches).

I also have an O/A setup and i own the tanks. I never had the acetylene tank filled as I did not want to worry about it. I use oxy/propane and it is great for general heating and brazing. Here the acetylene reg will screw right into a BBQ grill tank.

If you have an O/A torch, using propane will be safer and you will only have to rent the oxy bottle. Your insurance co will probbaly like it better.

I had a Bernzomatic oxy/MAPP torch with disposable bottles. The oxygen was like using the MIG disposables, maybe 10 minutes use. Real small flame though.

suppose it comes down to how much heat and how local you want to apply it

MApp is OK for heating generally but heating say a small stud would be difficult without getting a lot of heat into the background as well... stuff like manifolds just wont go IME...


Odd with insurance... all mine asked was do I use heat to cut/weld... did not matter if it was a hot air gun, plumbers torch, plasma or OA/OP....???

How about the oxy turbo kit or the home plus porta pack, any good ? I need it a local flame as when heat shrinking the metal has to get cherry red if it was a big flame it would heat to much of an area which may be worse than the lump im trying to remove. I want it to stop stretched metal oil canning too

oxyturbo is good for small stuff..... I like it for lead welding on roofs (****** takin OA up a ladder )

bottles dont last long with a "big" flame tho

Oxy Mapp is hot enough, the difference is that the whole flame is the same temp as the middle cone, unlike oxy acet where the middle cone is hotter, something like that. I use oxy mapp nearly daily for silver soldering, brazing, and heating up seized bolts etc, I find it a useful tool and price wise a lot cheaper than acet. I have a set of oxy/acet in the workshop though as nothing can really beat it, but the portable Mapp is very handy for the price.
