Polo '97 rear wipes

Sold me Grandads car for him yesterday, the rear wiper isnt working.
As we were offered a good price, i said i would try and fix the rear wiper.

If i apply power to the motor directly from battery, it works.

I have 3 wires, with ignition on,
1 is 12v permanent
2 0.2v ((when switch operated) 0v when not operated)
3 0v, to earth i think.


Do 1 & 2 alternate the power, to provide left and right movement?

When the switch is operated, the washers work, but the motor doesnt.

I am thinking a relay is at fault?

I have made sure they are all plugged in, and all the fuses are fine.

I applied voltage to the motor and moved the arm form one side to the other, then i plugged the motor back in , operated the switch, and it returned to its normal rest position.

The relays, from what i have found on the webnet, bottom left on the relay panel is rear wipe...?

i would think that the 12 volt permanent is so that the wiper is self parking ie if you switch it of it wont just stay in the middle of the screen

3 will be earth as said

2 0.2 volts is your problem should read 12 when switched on

the relay can be tested easily and some are abe to be cleaned depends if the cover comes off.
sounds more like a bad connection to me thats why you are getting 0.2 volts

According to the manual I have here, Brown to earth, Blue is live from fuse box, that will be the parking circuit, and white and brown from the relay, which should give 12 volts when the relay is energised, check to see if the relay pulls in, and check for 12v at terminal 2, I would suspect a dodgy connection or poor contact in the relay.

Il get a new yard special relay and try that, if not, i suppose where it goes through the quarter into the tailgate might be first place to check voltage. Cheers men

just test the relay with 12 volts to energise it then use a meter to test its working accross the other two connections

If its got the wiper motor in an opening door IE a tailgate then it'll be a brocken wire in the door gaiter where the wires flex when opening door

I have just had the same fault on a transit wipers and it was the relay.
Different vehicle i know but i hope this helps.
