Pollard 1ax drill

Got given one the other day and collected it last night, maybe it's me but i'm thinking it's a bit of an odd beast... Base is best described as 'kin heavy (2 person lift but you ain't going far with it) with big heavy table too but seems kinda at odds with the fairly light 1MT quill and 340 rpm min speed

Just curiosity really but I'm wondering if Pollard used a kind of modular design i.e. same base/table with several different models? Google hasn't turned up much, a few much bigger drills for sale and another 1AX with nothing in between

pollards used to make a lot of drills for work on production lines. i once had one of there drills. the column was square cast iron on a masive cast base . verry robust it had a no 1 mt quill

I think its pretty standard practice for manufacturers to fit their various drilling heads to different bases etc, I know Meddings do it too.

Cheers guys, just never seen such a big heavy base and table on a machine with only a 1MT quill before and it kinda threw me as the bottom half is more in line with what i'd expect of a geared head drill with much bigger quill capacity

no 1 mt was the standard of the day then , then 2mt . then 3mt

If mine is anything to go by they are just very heavily built. Mine is 2mt and weighs about half a ton, it is a radial though.
