polishing metal?

went to machine mart yesterday to buy a 2bhp motor only to be told that its not design for direct work in other words mop.
I need a powerfull motor for a mop attachment to polish tubes,
got an 8" grinder not enough power to put pressure on. any ideas how I can get round this?

You could use the motor to drive a seperate shaft.

MM do belt pulleys to fit motors. A seperate shaft, say, 1" could be mounted in two pillow block bearings on a plate on which the motor is also mounted. Then some method to mount the mops to the shaft.

You could have a mop each end if the driven pulley was in between the bearings.

If you were closer you could have had my 10" pedestal jobby, polished many ms, stainless and aluminium tube up on that. Reverse direction= hang on to the part, worst case skates off compared to bouncing round workshop and scrapping the job!
Depends how far you want to go and condition tube is in ie mill scale, backends, pitt marks, gouges, etc
The ****** motors are not ment for continuous use but all the same pretty cheap to buy. Plummer blocks cheap to buy if you want to knock something up.

thanks for the replies chaps.
I've got a 2 bhp saw bench ,I wonder if I could rig some thing with at(but still use it as a saw bench when needed..
mainly just to polish scratches etc on bright tubing ready for chroming.
if not what motor would you guys recomend 1hp or more.the 8" bench grinder is weak as **** as soon as PUT pressure on the bugger starts to slow down so I want some thing that got a bit of oomph

I have that problem with my 8" sealey bench grinder too. When my mops are worn out I'll be replacing them with 6" ones as that is effectively gearing them down by 25%.

If the 8" bench grinder was less than £120 it will be ****** and have no torque even rated at 3/4 hp. To give you a vague idea an old English rated around 1/3 hp to 1/2 hp will have more torque.

Got a couple of old English monsters a 1hp and think the other is a 1 1/2hp on the 10" pedestal polisher. Various 10" x 3" wide mops and soaps, may need some 40 or 60 grit and sparks will fly, weird.
Original motor on polisher was 3/4hp 3 phase but with 1 1/2hp English single phase on i cannot get it to slow down, cost about £30 each.
Hunt around for something.

They are ****** Pete thats why, good price, slap 6" on ok for small diameter work especially small aluminium. Sealey over priced same machinery usually 25% cheaper under another brand name.
Do use a couple 3/4hp similar but prefer the Wolf 1/3 hp with 6" mops roughly the same as a ****** 1/2 hp.

the 8" grinder I bought from machine mart paid £58 for it. it works ok till I put a little of pressure then it'll slow down and stop. to me its useless as a polisher.
