I'm doing blacksmithing demonstrations at a craft fair this weekend and yesterday in a rainy quiet spell I went to chat to the pole lathe woodsman, he gave me a quick demo then let me have a go.
He said I did well for my first go but it felt so odd being completely new to something & not having any feel for it or natural understanding how to achieve the desired result.
I've given a lot of blacksmithing lessons and I suddenly really felt how newbie pupils feel, they're often nervous at first of the hot metal & I was even a bit nervous of lathe thinking "are my fingers going to get pulled into that"?! as your left hand goes really close to the spinning wood.
Also really made me feel like one of my own pupils because they often say "it's harder than it looks" and I said exactly the same thing to him. I had my Bambi legs on!
He did the notch thingymabob on the right and I did the one on the left. Good fun.
