Plug welding tips

I have to weld 2 pieces of ally bar, 2mm thick, corner to corner. I've got a 6mm hole thro' the top piece. Problem I'm having is getting the ally to melt on the piece underneath, without cooking all around the hole in the top piece. If i extend the electrode to get a good arc right to the bottom of the hole, I then can't get the rod into the pool. If I pull back, it just melts the hole and doesn't get to the bottom. Any tips?

Hello dave,

I would suggest that a larger hole to weld through will make life much easier, it is not going to end up like a spot weld as such but you should be able to weld in a circle, fusing top and bottom together?
