Please recommend me a Grease Gun

I'm fed up with my cartridge grease gun - when it ceases to pump and I replace the cartridge there always seems to be a load left behind, and when you pull back the slider thing grease oozes out of the back. Time for a new one I think, but which ?

.... needs to take 400 cc cartridges

.... probably one of the newer single handed ones


This is for occasional / hobby use but I want something of reasonable quality - recommendations please.

Strip and clean away all the grease and when you reassemble the gun turn the plunger seal around 180° ...... job's a good'un!

I’ve had my trusty old Wanner for years, Admittedly not cartridge fed but ultra reliable & has never let me down.

I've suffered the same problem, bought 2 cartridge guns, never worked for long,theyve been branded ones from local factors, last year ,got a 2 handled one ,where the cartridge fits directly to the body[no cannister tube] & apart from bleeding it twice, its worked ok.

Looks as if it should be much easier to keep clean, it needs to be good for the price though.

I like the alemite guns
Expensive but think they are the nicest i have ever used and definitely the best chuck

There pistol grip has 2 settings
A high pressure low volume setting and a low pressure high volume setting renoving the need for 2 grease guns

I recently bought one fo these and it sucks the cartridge dry. Comes with adapters which allow use of both kinds of screw cartridges and normal none screw cartridges

I do think a lot has to do with modern greases(I use the red high speed stuff), I have a really nice Snap On gun which has a handle that is adjustable for pressure/flow but I often change a cart because I'm fed up of messing about. When it's working it's superb. It's very similar to the Alemite one posted above.

The plunger seals in a standard 400g grease gun are reversible. However, turned one way around they are suitable for reloading via cartridge, and turned around the other way the seals are suitable for bulk filler refilling. We had bulk fill in the workshop but cartridge "in field". I also worked as a line lubricator in Pedigree Petfoods for a year and manually pumped on average 4 cases of 12 cartridges a week of lithium based EP2, all the other greases we used were from bulk fill. So I became adapt at swapping the cleaned seals from one application to the other. Worn out seals from cartridge guns went in to bulk fill guns and vice versa, when the bulk gun seals wore out again they were used in conjunction with an empty cartridge with the top cut off to allow for refilling from bulk so basically we got 3 X lifespans from each set of grease gun plunger seals.

A couple of years ago I treated myself to a new grease gun - even though there wasn't a spot of rust on the old one.

I fancied a gun with a single handed pistol grip and bought a McNaught K32. Easy to squeeze and with an excellent chuck, it has transformed regular greasing into almost a pleasure.

If you have some money spare you can’t go wrong with the Milwaukee m18 grease gun 10,000 psi and you can select how many pumps it does via a rotary dial. If you deal in lots of plant and trucks it’s ideal
