after all of two weeks of being owned by my new SIP 150DP , and lots of reading through your forum I can now do some reasonable welds . I have just finsihed welding two 13m angle iron to my steel barge bilges to replace old rotten ones and on the whole I am pleased with the results. This site is great for checking why something went wrong, and going back next day and sorting it!! most apprecaited.
ANYWAY.. I am now about to fill in the old rectangular (ish) windows with new 4mm steel plates, then to cut a few smaller ones out later.
Has anyone got any advice as to mount / hold these plates (up to 1.5m x .6) in place while i weld them in.. also is it best to weld say 2 inches at a time then start on the other side to avoid overheating the plate? Can I tack weld to hold them in place first ??
Any advice, suggestions, etc would be really welcome.. thanks again forum!
