Plastic bumper paint

I'm trying to find some grey plastic bumper paint for early '80s plastic bumpers. Hoping to make the bumpers look original and I have to use paint as the rear one is from a different car and is silver.

I remember finding a litre to spray through a spray gun for an old Citroen about 15 years ago which worked brilliantly, but now I can only find aerosol cans.

Does anyone know what it is called and where to get it?

i thought those bumpers was a type of fibreglass composite stuff what about just using grey epoxy primer or iv'e seen them done in grey stone chip to hide damage etc

later renaults had the plastic colours avail in proper reno paint at the dealer ..as of 12 years ago when i last did one

correct. It was a sort of shiny silk finish as I recall. I also think it required a special primer like the Montego. I suggest a decent autopaint supplier should be able to match the other bumper and add matting compound. As your silver bumper is painted (I assume) key it up with a wet soapy grey scotch and paint.

Thanks all. The people who run the local paint shop are on holiday I think. Some young lads in without much experience of paint. Will try again. 2K with matting agent ought to work. I don't have much painting ability with rattle cans.

I think the bumpers were the first (or one of the first) plastic ones fitted to cars. They are a moulded plastic with glass reinforcement. I think the colour is slightly lighter than the later Renaults, but it has faded a lot.

The R5 is almost finished! Just needs bumper paint and the wheels sorting out and it will be ready to roll. It's tiny! Much smaller than the later R5 (I've got one of them too) so it should be great fun.

Malcolm, Looking at it from a different angle have you thought about using plastic Dye as opposed to just paint??

Good stuff that is, i was going to suggest it before i read your post. Its far cheaper and it wont loose colour again as its a dye. When i last used it, it did take a while to dry but usually takes 15 minutes. Wear gloves though, else you'll get grey fingers.

As its french, the colour should be just right.

Its also good for interior vinyl, plastics and tyre walls. Match your wind mirrors.

Thankfully both my Renault 5s are 1989 GT Turbos - which have body coloured bumpers.

Though I have had a 1985 1.1 TL (beige, but unusually for the first year of Supercinq, it had a 5 speed gearbox) and a 1990 1.7 Monaco (leather seats and power steering!).

I do like the original R5s though, but the only one I've driven was a Turbo 2 - which isn't really comparable to the normal ones with the engine in the front...

I like the supercinq. I've got a late fuel injected Campus. It's great fun but would need a lot of work to make presentable. Might try to pick up a faster one on eBay. I looked at a couple of Monacos but they were in poor condition. How do you rate them against the GT Turbo?

The Supercinq was bought for a banger rally that didn't happen. I haven't even looked under the bonnet but it's brilliant. It just works. Wants rust around the windscreen and in the sills sorting. Floors too probably as it has a big leak. With prices where they are it would be cheaper to get another and use the cylinder head to fuel infect a Renault 4.

The 1.7 (GTX or Monaco) has more torque low down than the GT Turbo, and the twin throttle carb makes for quite lively performance if you take the revs up. Quite pleasant (for a small car of it's era) to drive long distances too with the leather seats. But it's not in the same league as the frantic acceleration of the GT Turbo.

There is a 1.4 Monaco too with an automatic gearbox. It's just not the same without the F2N 1.7 litre engine though. That engine is the one that developed into the 1.8 used in the Clio and Megane (with fuel injection) and numerous Volvos. In some ways the C1J 1.4 is nicer to work on because it's simpler (I've rebuilt a couple), and can take huge abuse (in the Campus it produces about 50bhp. In the standard GT Turbo 120bhp, and in modified GT Turbos, the carb becomes the limit around 220bhp. Change the carb to a bigger one or add injection, and that block/head can put out over 300bhp reliably.
