Plasma goggles

hello
new to the forum just purchased a plasma cutter and need to buy some goggles what type do i need to buy ive been using my welding mask but just want to get some light weight goggles .would the gas welding ones be ok ,had ark eye a few times and really dont want to have it again

Hi there Gazbeam,
I use the gas goggles, I found the shade 4 goggles better for following intricate lines. But my plasma isn't that powerful. I have even used my sunglasses before.

I've got some shade 3 safety glasses which don't seem dark enough, and some shade 5 gas goggles which seem a bit too dark.

Shade 4 sounds about right then ! I didn't know you could get shade 4......

My plasmas only 40A though.

I use my plasma cutter al the time, I tried brazing goggles, usless, I used to use sunglasses, then one day I just stuck on some safety glasses, and no problem. If you angle the torch just right the body of the torch just masks the arc, and you can se what you are doing. A good tip is to use either chalk or a marker pen to highlight the line you are cutting too.
Always wear some kind of eye protection as one day I had a big spark bounce of the lense of my glasses. Made me go all shivery thinking of the consequences.....

There is a face screen you can buy that is specifically designed for plasma cutting, it is shade 8. The only down side is that it only protects your eyes & the top half of your face & due to the plasma arc being so hot is not suitable for a lot of cutting. I would always recomend that you buy one of these good electronic face screens from 3m, Optrel etc, they have settings that go from shade 5 through to 13 & gives you full face protection.

You don't need a welding mask for plasma cutting.

If you want a full face shield, hypertherm do one in a shade 8. Otherwise just go with some flip down goggles or some 'sunglasses' in a shade suited to the amperage of your plasma cutter. I use a 5, but it gets a bit bright on full blast.

Face mask for plasma cutting

I bought a shade 4 face mask from ebay for £15.99 inc delivery - Item number: 190280688137 - listed as suitable for use with plasma cutters.

My plasma cutter is a BlueWeld Prestige 34K which I got from the Welders Warehouse - this model has the built in compressor.

Having read the replies in this thread I am now wondering if shade 4 is going to be dark enough. Just don't want to take any chances.
