Plasma cutting box

Found this photo the opther day.
When I first started plasma cutting I kept cutting my workbench.
So modelled on the gas cutting bench I saw somewhere along the way I made this.

I did wonder if I was being a bit precious and pointless.
Soon changed my mind. I have considered making it water tight and using with water to catch all the sparks and dust. But then I would have to fanny about with buckets of water and it would never get used again

The welding tips and tricks chap has been making one with extraction built in and a collector tray, it looks a bit elaborate but very functional.

Water tables the way forward! None of that crap lingering in the air for hours settling in your lungs! Not sure what you'd need the buckets etc for? Just fill it with plasma quench and forget about it.

Also, curve your slats or bend them into a chevron so you 'never' cut along one.

What is plasma quench?
I usualy keep it hanging on the wal out of the way as floor space is at a premium.
curved slats is a good idea.
I do have a massive extractor fan that I use when plasla cutting as the dust is horrible.

I really like that idea thanks for posting it, you wouldn't need much water in the bottom but a drain plug would be useful. Never heard of plasma quench either though I found this on a yank site i've no idea where or if you could get the ingredients over here.

PLASMA QUENCH RECIPE

Here's the recipe for home-made PlasmaQuench
1/4 pound of sodium nitrite powder ($15/pound)
1 teaspoon of Physan 20 ($8/8oz bottle)
1 oz Ultramarine blue food-grade dye ($5/oz.)
Mix well, treats 75 gallons of water.

That's interesting. The Physan is a disinfectant. The blue must be for effect and the sodium nitrate actually does something. Trying to think what...

I think that when I am doing workshops and have members of the public using my gear and breathing my air I should adopt this system.
Generally I use the plasma cutter for a few moments lopping out components, on thw workshop days I sees a lot of use.
it gets treated as bit of a toy. But I can remember feelig like was a new toy when I bought it.

Yes, you'd have to cover yourself these days for H&S, insurance etc.

i made somethin similar when i was an apprentice for the fab shop, had a funnel type arrangement on each end so you could connect the extract to it, made it water tight and gave it a lip all the way around the edge so it didnt caught all the ****. worked an absolute treat! it also ended up looking abit like a canoe!
