plasma cutter is kaput

Hi , new here , seems a good site . I am restoring an old car at the moment and my plasma cutter - a Clarke Plasma King 25 gave up last weekend , I have taken the cover off and found that the cicuit board has 2 burnt thingys ( dont know the technical term ) I have contacted Clarke and they dont supply new boards or will they give me a circuit diagram . I took it to a local TV repair guy and he said he needed a diagram so he could replace the 2 burnt thingys (neds to know the values of the burnt thingys ). I m now stuck , cant afford a new cutter just now . Are there any experts on here who could point me in the direction of somewhere or someone who could either fix my board or supply a new one .

A more detailed location may help (local knowledge an all that) with recommendations. A welding repair shop would be a better bet- Gauge and Welding in Dartford do equipment repairs- not much use to you if you're up North though

Mathiesons in Galston, nr Kilmarnock have a supurb repair facilty.

However, I think by the time they have charged labour for the diagnosing and doing the repair and added the VAT I bet it wouldn't be far off what you paid for it.

Definatley worth giving them a call though.

Two burnt thingys

Ahhh....you've reminded me of the time I pre-cleaned a joint with acetone, and then carelessly left the rag sitting on the floor when I knelt down to weld the panel. With the helmet on, I didn't notice the rag was burning until it ignited my trousers. It didn't hurt the welder at all, but my two burnt thingys were kaput for a week!

I have always wondered what the clarke plasma cutters were like. How long have you had it and was/is it any good. They dont do the 25 any more what are its specs ?

It was the first cutter I had . It seemed ok - ie cut metal out of my restoration project . I have never used another type so can not compare it with anything else . Maybe some of the experts here can give a better answer and even point me in the direction I should be looking as it seems I may have to replace my unit with a new one . What would be the best for me ? Its only used in a light capacity for my hobby car .
