I have been asked to make a cover for a kind of pit or sump in a basement of an very old building. The purpose of the sump is to take any leakage of water from some heating plant which is down there. The sump is roughly 1650mm by 2150mm and is a couple of feet deep. They want some kind of mesh cover so that a) they can see in and see if there is any water collecting in there and b) so that flow of water into the sump is not impeded in the event of a catastrophic leak. There will be a pump to kick in and remove water when it gets to a certain level.
My plan is to make a cover in four sections (to bridge across the sump the short way) with frames of 50 by 50mm angle. Each angle frame will have on-edge flat (e.g. 50 by 6mm) on a 200mm spacing between the longer sides so each frame will look like a kind of ladder with the side rails (angle) roughly 500mm apart and the rungs (on-edge flat) every 200mm.
The part I am less sure about is what to skin it with – I have been thinking welded mesh (e.g. 50 by 50 by 4.75mm). It would be pretty well supported underneath by the angle frame and the on-edge flat cross pieces.
The guys I am making it for say they want it strong enough for a couple of people to stand on it. It is by no means in a thoroughfare. I guess it might be stood on while they are moving stuff about or working on the pipework.
So, hopefully that all makes some sort of sense….. and my question is: Is there something more elegant than weld mesh I should be thinking about to skin my frames?
Thanks in anticipation.
