Brian, the cheapest way to Tig is to get a small inverter - under £200 in the right pplaces, and a valved tig torch. With the gas/reg/hoses, you have a scratch start Tig. I recently did the whole thing for less than £200, including a second hand lincoln inverter, and made a footpedal too. Works a treat.
If you want it easy, get an H.F. (high frequency) or Lift Tig, from Weldequip or DIY Welding, or take a chance on something off ebay.
Weldequip sells the Fusion inverters. They are good machines apparently, UK made, good backup, but any new machine like that will be £600+, list price. There are people in the trade on this site who would expect to pay FAR less than that - it's a "who you know" situation.
You can certainly get a secondhand one off ebay for £200-£300. - a really nice kemppi pulse tig went for £200 the other day...
I would have a quiet word with Weldequip and see what he can do for you. Otherwise, go scratch start. There are techniques for making it easy, and it'll be a fraction of the price.
Si
Edit - there are one or two European-made MMA or Tig inverter sets on ebay at the mo which I would look at buying, if I were shopping. (if you want to know which ones, PM me - I won't say which ones here cos that'll maybe put up the prices)
There are also loads of "German" tig sets, which are actually chinese... but you couls get a Rehmann for less than £150. The only thing is that the 160A sets seem to be tig only, not stick. And god only knows how reliable they would be...
